While we're on the subject of RT
I thought "Vincent Black Lightning 1952" ought to be up here as well.

It's definitely one of my top ten.

I hear tell the Del McCoury Band recorded it a few years back. I've been meaning to see if I could turn up their version somewhere; I'm not a huge bluegrass fan, but Del McCoury is brilliant.

Most welcome! Glad you enjoyed it.

Did you see the others in the previous post? The "Oops, I did it again" cover is... remarkably odd, and surprisingly good.

Yes I did. You're right, the "oops" cover is surprisingly good. RT has a lovely voice. Where is he from? The music and his accent sounds like Newfoundland. (Related note: I sure hope you've heard Stan Rogers' songs. If not, I strongly recommend him!)

I actually likes Christy's cover of Beeswing better. RT's was beautiful, but Christy's moved me more. I liked his arrangement, and he sang it with... more personal feeling? If that makes sense? Listening to the two versions, I felt like RT was singing about a woman he'd loved and lost, and C was singing about THE woman he'd loved and lost.

Nevertheless, it's my new favorite song, so thank you:)

Funny story: I played it for Chris, who may or may not have gotten tears, and then I played him the Vincent song, upon the completion of which, he commented "I used to think my music was depressing. But then I heard yours." :D

I'll try this again--my parents reached the train station to pick me up whilst I was trying to make the previous reply, so it got a bit truncated/miscoded.

London, I think. But his father was Scottish, IIRC, and he's lived in the US for quite some years; I suppose he has ended up sounding a bit in the Newfoundlandish direction.

I have, thanks. Actually, he's a songwriter whom I knew from his songs long before I'd actually heard any of his records. He wrote some great stuff, for sure.

Interesting. I can't decide which I like better--RT's version I've known for years, and it's more or less the one I sing myself. Or at least that I used to sing--I developed sort of a block on the guitar part and gave it up when I got sick of screwing it up. Besides, I don't sing that much these days and when I do it's only unaccompanied.

I know what you mean about Christy--he's got a way of inhabiting a song that not many can match.

Nevertheless, it's my new favorite song, so thank you:)

:-)
So, what does he listen to?

Those are actually fairly mild, by my standards. "I Am Stretched On Your Grave" is one of my favourites. (Although I actually do sing a fair number of quasi-happy-endingish songs. Not that it seems to make any difference. I think that people tend to sort of assume that any song somebody with my type of voice sings must be sad.)
