So, I was thinking about putting this fic on Archive of Our Own, and I realised it needed some work. Eight hundred words later, plus some pruning of unnecessary dialogue tags and ellipses, here it is.

Harry Potter made his way back to Gryffindor Tower from the room with the amazing mirror. He was elated at his discovery, but somehow he knew that it would be a thousand times better if only he could share it with a friend. Maybe Ron will be up. I know he's missed his Mum and Dad and his baby sister this Christmas, so I'm sure he'd love to see them even if it's only in a mirror. But once he'd got through the portrait hole he saw that Hermione was sitting awake with a book, reading by candlelight. There was nobody else in the room. He wasn't used to her sitting up this late in the Common Room, but then again classes weren't in session yet. Lavender and Parvati weren't back yet, but perhaps Hermione found the dorm too lonely without them? The boys' dorm would have been pretty lonely if Ron hadn't stayed, now that he thought of it.

Hermione had returned to Hogwarts yesterday evening, earlier than the other returning pupils, well before the start of term. He'd been surprised to see her walk into the Great Hall, just before dinner, walking side by side with Professor MacGonagall. He'd felt very funny inside, which he supposed must have come from being so surprised. He'd wanted to leap up from the table, run to his friend, and fling his arms about her, which was a thing he'd never done with anyone before, but something had made him think it wouldn't look right and might embarrass her, so instead he'd waited until she came over and sat down with himself and Ron. And instead of hugging her, he'd offered her his hand to shake. She'd smiled, and held onto his hand longer than anyone else had ever done, so it must have been enough.

He started to creep up the stairs to find Ron, but then he thought better of it. Ron was probably asleep by now, and he didn't like to be awakened. Besides, they'd gone exploring night before last, and hadn't found much of anything, so Harry suspected Ron would grumble at him and go back to sleep. Instead, he took the cloak off and sat down beside Hermione on the couch. She gave a little squeak, as if she'd been lost in her book and hadn't noticed him coming in, but then she smiled at him and he felt as if the room had suddenly got much brighter. "Hullo, Harry. I thought you'd gone to sleep hours ago."

Happy Birthday to wsr! Hope it's a good day for you!

"May the cities in your wake
Burn like candles on your cake!"

I'd hoped to have another bit of "Gwen and Ken's Hogwarts Adventure" done by now, but 1500 words isn't enough to post. Soon, I hope. Any fic requests?

It was a fine rainy day in Spring, and drops of rain were making dapples on the surface of the lake. The Giant Squid had gone below to sulk, or, if Luna Lovegood was right, to play noughts and crosses with the Merfolk. Hermione Granger and Ginny Weasley were sitting together on a blanket in the shelter of an oak tree beside the lake. They were comfortably dry, as Hermione had augmented the branches with a minor water-repellent charm.

"My great-great-great grandfather killed one of the Malfoys here," Ginny said softly, "a fifth cousin or somesuch to the git we're acquainted with. I think it happened in 1661 or so. Somebody wrote that he gutted him like a trout. All Wizard's duels were fought with swords in those days, of course. Wand fights in the seventeenth century were nothing more than schoolboy brawls."

"Professor MacGonagall told me there was still a fencing instructor here when she was a student in the Forties."

"Oh, sport fencing... It's a nice little game and good exercise, if you like that sort of thing, but to tell the truth the moves are all wrong if you're fighting for your life with a sharp sword in hand and an enemy before you. And it's better training with a plain wooden stick than with a foil if there's real combat in your future. You can only cast a couple of small spells through a piece of wire." There was a pretty little smile on her face.

It was clearCollapse )

Lá deas fearthainneach san Earrach a bhí ann, agus deora báisteach ag déanamh spotaí ar bharr an locháin. Bhí an Scuid Mhór i ndiaidh gabháil síos chun a bheith stuacach, nó b'fhéidir, má bhí an ceart ag Luna Lovegood, chun imirt an madra rua agus an ghé lena Murúcha. Bhí Hermione Granger agus Ginny Weasley ina suí le chéile ar blaincéad fá scáth dair ar thaobh an locháin. Bhí siad deas tirim, mar gheall ar gheasróg bheag uiscedhíonach a chuir Hermione mar forlíon ar ghéaga an chrainn.

"Mharaigh mo shin-sin-sin-seanathair duine de mhuintir Malfoy anseo," dúirt Ginny go mánla, "col deichniúr nó mar sin de ag an bhodach atá aithne againn air. Sa bhliain 1661 a tharla an troid, is dóigh liom. Scríofa gur bhain sé a chuid phutóg de, mar a bhaineann iascaire putóg de breac. Troideadh achan comhrac draíochta le claíomh sna laethanta sin, ar ndóigh. Ní raibh gcomhrac bataí ar bith ach iaróg ghasúr scoile sa seachtú haois déag."

"D'inis an tOllamh MacGonagall dom go raibh teagascóir pionsóireacht anseo fós nuair a bhí sí ina mic léinn anseo sa Daichidí."

"Och, pionsóireacht spóirt... Cluiche deas agus aclaíocht mhaith atá ann, más maith leat, ach i bhfírinne tá na gluaiseachtaí go leor mícheart má tá tú ag troid i ndáiríre, claíomh géar i do lámh agat agus namhaid i d'éadan. Is fearr traenáil le maide simplí adhmaid ná le pionsa maol, má tá fíor-chomraic i ndán duit. Cha dtig leat ach cúpla piseoigín a imirt le píosa sreinge." Bhí miongháire beag álainn uirthi.

Íarnóta amháin eile [Dec. 27th, 2013|01:17 am]

And in the face of needing to write a paper in Irish in the not too distant future, I decided I needed immediate writing practice. And I remembered that I'd had a plan since some time ago to write an Irish-language version of one of the shorter fics I've written in my life: "Her Best Friend's Girlfriend."

And now, 2400 words later, I reckon I'm done with the job. So, that's about three times as long, and mind Irish is in some ways more compact than English, so it seems pretty clear I'm after putting in a lot of extra background that was wanting. Which means I'm going to have to translate the story, because I can't just say "Go and read the original."

So, sometime in the next day or so, I'll be posting "Girseach a Cara 's Dílse" and "Her Best Friend's Girlfriend, 2013."

Isn't it a funny world?

Ginny Weasley was bored stiff. Aunt Muriel--she was actually Ginny's great aunt, but the youngest Weasley didn't think there was anything great about Muriel Prewett beyond her great ability to be a miserable person to anyone within range of her screeching voice--had certain notions about what girls and boys were meant to do. Boys, of course, were meant to dig in the garden, feed the cows, cut down or pull up growing things that shouldn't be, and watch the sheep, but when they weren't doing such things it was perfectly appropriate for them to ramble about and not so terrible for them to get dirty, at least as long as they didn't cause scandal or fail to wipe their feet before they came inside.

Girls, on the other hand, were meant to be polite, to keep their voices down, and to do the things that had been appropriate for them to do during Aunt Muriel's own Crimean War-era girlhood, such as embroidery or mending, if they weren't helping with the cooking and cleaning. And God and Merlin forbid that a girl should even mention that she'd ever flown on a broomstick in her life, much less say it was a nice day for a fly and she'd love to be in the air.

Which last was the reason why Ginny was sitting here trying to sew up a seam that had given way in one of her own blouses, whilst Ron and the Twins were out flying over the farm, with the excuse that they were checking the fences to be sure that the sheep that Mister Dogburn, Aunt Muriel's neighbour, grazed on three acres of Aunt Muriel's land weren't going to get loose and either wander onto the nearby Muggle farms, where somebody might notice that some of them had blue and green wool, or else break into Aunt Muriel's garden and destroy her cabbages or her petunias or, worst of all, the herbs she put in her nightly tea.

It wasn't fair at all...Collapse )

Hermione Granger was concerned for her best friend. Harry seemed to be running off on mysterious errands during almost all of the time that he wasn't either in class or doing homework. She supposed she was pleased with the fact that he was actually staying on top of his assignments, but the out of characterness bothered her. She couldn't detect any signs of him being under the influence of mind control potions, and he'd shown himself highly resistant to the Imperius curse, but was it possible that someone was manipulating him into doing... something?

It wasn't that she particularly feared he might have a secret girlfriend in some other House. Hermione knew it would happen someday, but surely Harry would tell her about it. She knew full well she hadn't any chance with him at the present time, of course.

She was only his best friend...Collapse )
